Saturday 16th June is Youth Day in South Africa. It was previously known as Soweto Day as on this day in 1976 students in Soweto rioted in protest against the introduction of Afrikaans as the language of instruction of half their school curriculum. The issue however, was not only the Afrikaans language but the whole system of “Bantu education” which was characterised by separate schools and universities, poor facilities, overcrowded classrooms and inadequately trained teachers.
On 16 June 1976 more than 20 000 pupils from Soweto began a protest march. In the wake of clashes with the police, and the violence that ensued during the next few weeks, approximately 700 hundred people, many of them youths, were killed and property destroyed. Youth Day is a national holiday in honour of all the young people who lost their lives in the struggle against Apartheid and Bantu Education.
What does Youth Day mean to you?
In theory Youth Day is about remembering our past and a turning point in South African history but we believe that if we are honest, these days for most of us it is merely a public holiday to have fun and spend time with our families.
At Noordhoek Farm Village we believe that our children are our future and providing them with a safe environment, filled with activity and learning and creativity will help them become true leaders in our community and in our country.
Let us know what Youth Day means to you. Where were you on 16 June 1976? Do you remember 16 June 1976?
Youth Day 2012 at Noordhoek Farm Village:

This is a day for the dads and the kids as this year Youth Day corresponds with Fathers Day (17 June) so come on down to the Village and learn how fun science can be and how science is all around us and in everything that we do! Come and get your very own Science Experiment Kit (R30) and learn how to do experiments simply by adding a few everyday items from your home.
