See our previous post about the Western Leopard Toad and how they breed and when… just in case it’s any time from NOW! August on a rainy night!
Glencairn:
We are asking residents of Glencairn to tell us if they spot toads in Glencairn this season. After 2 years of patrolling the roads, Toad NUTS is worried that the Glencairn toads are either extinct, or have gone into hiding!
Any pictures can be posted to www.toadnuts.co.za . The picture here are the last records of toads in Glencairn – take in 2009 by Sean Thomas.
Kommetjie:
The success of the rehabilitation of Skilpadsvlei in Kommetjie has encouraged everyone in the environmental world. Situated just south of the famous Surfers Corner, this vlei was filled in the 1940’s. As a result the numbers of Leopard Toads had dropped substantially in that area.
Wally Petersen of KEAG and Suretha Dorse of City led the rehabilitation and re-excavation of the vlei. The dam gradually filled and two weeks ago, the resounding call of 3 male Leopard Toads were heard for the first time in 60 years across Kommetjie.
The toads are back in business – once the females find these males, eggs will be laid and we will wait anxiously for the toadlets to emerge in November. Well done Wallie and Suretha.
