Women’s Day is celebrated in South Africa every year on the 9th August and is an annual public holiday. It honours the courage & strength of women who protested against the pass laws on women in South Africa. 20,000 women of all races marched to the Union buildings in Pretoria on 9 August 1956 to deliver a petition containing more than 100,000 signatures. The women sang a protest song Wathint’Abafazi Wathint’imbokodo! (you strike a woman, you strike a rock).
Thus Women’s Day has come to be celebrated in South Africa, not only for these women but for all who sacrificed for a free, non-racial and non-sexist democratic South Africa. It also honours the role women have played in developing our nation.
Noordhoek Farm Village will also be honouring women this 9th August 2012, but we don’t plan on handing out roses or discounting your coffee ladies…
Our gift to the women at Noordhoek Farm Village is a Gift that keeps Giving… so women look out for your gift at Noordhoek Farm Village. Our women will be handing out bags containing Watsonia Bulbs to all our women visitors. These watsonia bulbs have been donated by Greencube Nursery, to plant in your own gardens.
Watsonia’s an easy gal and we mean that in the nicest way! She doesn’t need rich soil, copious amounts of fertilizer, insecticides or other fussing. Give her sunshine and some occasional water, and she’s happy! Often happy enough to multiply, making her a perfect plant for busy gardeners.
As your Watsonia grows and blossoms, let it be a reminder of the growth and achievements of women in South Africa. Happy Women’s Day!
We are delighted that Greencube will be reopening at Noordhoek Farm Village this spring with their focus on beautiful, edible and practical plants. Keep a close watch for the opening sale in early September!
All our restaurants will be open on Thursday 9th August and it is likely to be a busy day as the weather looks clear but chilly! We recommend reservations!
