An Idiot’s guide to singing the national anthem

If you speak English and have struggled to learn the National Anthem of South Africa (Nkosi sikelel’ iAfrika),we can help you! Noordhoek Farm Village came across this video clip on YOU TUBE. Rugby World Cup starts on the 9th September 2011 and the Springboks play their first game on the 11th September, so it is imperative that we learn the anthem and fast!

In fact with the Springboks departure on 1 September 2011 – all the staff at Noordhoek Farm Village will attempt to sing the National Anthem on the bandstand at 10h30. Visitors, locals, friends, family and really good singers are welcome to join us! In the meantime see the video clip below made for English speakers! The real words and their meanings are below.

Nkosi sikelel’ iAfrika God bless Africa
Maluphakanyisw’ uphondo lwayo, May her glory be lifted high
Yizwa imithandazo yethu, Hear our petitions
Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo. God bless us, Your children

Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso, God we ask You to protect our nation
O fedise dintwa le matshwenyeho, Intervene and end all conflicts
O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso, Protect us, protect our nation
Setjhaba sa South Afrika – South Afrika. Nation of South Africa, South Africa

Uit die blou van onse hemel, Ringing out from our blue heavens,
Uit die diepte van ons see, From the depths of our sea,
Oor ons ewige gebergtes, Over everlasting mountains,
Waar die kranse antwoord gee, Where the echoing cliffs resound,

Sounds the call to come together,
And united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom,
In South Africa our land.
